This chapter takes an intuitive approach to the subject: replace the sum by an integral and the Kronecker delta by the Dirac delta function, and you get from multivariable calculus to the calculus of variations! I would caution though that popularity doesn't really mean it should be on or off topic There's many questions that have attracted a large amount of attention that are not on-topic.
